Curtis Mayfield was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who rose to prominence in the 1960s as a founding member of the Impressions. His socially conscious songwriting and distinctive falsetto voice helped shape the sound of soul music, with hits such as "People Get Ready" and "Move On Up." After launching a solo career in 1970, Mayfield continued to blend funk, soul, and political commentary, most notably on the Super Fly soundtrack. He remained an influential figure in American music until his death in 1999.
