Bio

Johann Christian Bach (1735–1782) was a German composer of the Classical era, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. After early training in Leipzig and Berlin, he moved to Italy in 1754, where he studied with Padre Martini and composed operas and sacred music. In 1762 he settled in London, becoming music master to Queen Charlotte and a central figure in the city’s concert life. Bach’s mature works blend Italian lyricism with the emerging galant style. He wrote numerous symphonies, keyboard concertos, chamber pieces, and operas, many of which were published and widely performed across Europe. His music influenced the young Mozart, who met him during his London visit of 1764–65. Today he is remembered as the “London Bach,” bridging late Baroque traditions and the early Classical period. His catalogue includes about 300 works, preserved in modern editions and recordings.
