Dave Holland

Bio

Dave Holland is a British jazz bassist and composer born in Wolverhampton in 1946. He first gained international recognition in the late 1960s as a member of Miles Davis's electric bands, contributing to landmark albums such as In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. Since the 1970s, Holland has led his own ensembles, ranging from quartets and quintets to big bands, and has become known for his distinctive compositional voice and virtuosic bass playing. His groups often explore a blend of post-bop, free jazz, and fusion elements, and he has recorded extensively for ECM Records. Holland has also been an influential educator, serving as artistic director of the Banff Centre's jazz program and mentoring many younger musicians. He continues to perform and record with various configurations, maintaining a central role in contemporary jazz.
