Artie Shaw was an American clarinetist, composer, and bandleader who became one of the most popular figures of the swing era. Born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky in New York City in 1910, he led several highly successful big bands from the late 1930s through the 1950s, known for hits such as "Begin the Beguine" and "Frenesi." Shaw was noted for his innovative arrangements and for integrating string sections into jazz ensembles. Despite his commercial success, Shaw frequently expressed ambivalence toward the music business and retired from performing multiple times, ultimately leaving music in the early 1950s. He later became an author and lecturer, and his recordings remain influential in the history of jazz and popular music.
