Bio
João Gilberto was a Brazilian guitarist, singer and composer who originated bossa nova in the late 1950s. Born in Juazeiro, Bahia, he moved to Rio de Janeiro and developed the intimate, syncopated guitar style and soft vocal delivery that defined the genre. His landmark 1959 album Chega de Saudade introduced the sound to the world and featured the title track that became a standard. He collaborated with Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes on the 1963 album Getz/Gilberto, which brought bossa nova international acclaim and earned multiple Grammy Awards. Gilberto continued recording and performing into the 2000s, influencing generations of Brazilian and jazz musicians with his minimalist approach.
