Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) was an Italian composer, musicologist, and conductor whose works bridged late-Romantic tradition with early twentieth-century impressionism. Born in Bologna, he studied violin and composition locally before refining his craft in St. Petersburg under Rimsky-Korsakov, whose orchestration techniques left a lasting mark on Respighi’s vivid, coloristic style. Respighi is best known for his three symphonic tone poems—Fountains of Rome (1916), Pines of Rome (1924), and Roman Festivals (1928)—which evoke the city’s landscapes and history through lush orchestration and programmatic detail. He also composed operas, chamber music, and numerous transcriptions of early Italian music, reflecting his scholarly interest in Baroque and Renaissance sources. After settling in Rome as a professor at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, Respighi became a leading figure in Italian music between the world wars. His catalogue remains widely performed for its atmospheric beauty and masterful command of orchestral color.
