Bio
Kurt Masur (1927–2015) was a German conductor renowned for his long tenure as Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and later as music director of the New York Philharmonic. Born in Brzeg, then part of Germany, he studied piano and conducting in Leipzig before rising to prominence in East Germany. Internationally respected for his authoritative yet humane interpretations of the Austro-German repertoire, Masur also championed contemporary works and led major orchestras including the London Philharmonic and Orchestre National de France. His recordings, spanning concerto and symphonic literature, remain benchmarks in the classical catalog.
