Gary Numan is an English musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He first rose to prominence in the late 1970s as the frontman of Tubeway Army, achieving a UK number-one single with the synth-driven track "Are 'Friends' Electric?" in 1979. Shortly thereafter he launched a solo career that produced the international hit "Cars," establishing him as a pioneer of electronic and new-wave music. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Numan continued to explore darker, industrial-tinged sounds, influencing later artists in genres ranging from synth-pop to industrial rock. After a period of reduced mainstream visibility, he experienced a critical resurgence in the 2000s and 2010s with albums such as Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind) and Savage (Songs from a Broken World), reaffirming his status as an enduring innovator in electronic music.
