Marin Alsop

Bio

Marin Alsop is an American conductor recognized for her work with major orchestras and her advocacy for contemporary music. She has served as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, and she is the first woman to lead a major American orchestra in that capacity. Alsop studied at Yale University and the Juilliard School, later winning the Koussevitzky Prize at Tanglewood. Her recordings include complete cycles of works by Brahms, Dvořák, and Prokofiev, as well as numerous premieres of new compositions. She is also known for educational initiatives such as the Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship, which supports emerging women conductors, and for her frequent appearances at festivals including the BBC Proms and the Aspen Music Festival.
