Bio

Friedrich Gulda (1930–2000) was an Austrian pianist and composer whose career bridged the worlds of classical music and jazz. Trained at the Vienna Academy of Music, he first gained international recognition for his interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach, while also composing works that reflected his interest in both traditional and contemporary forms. In the 1950s Gulda began incorporating jazz into his repertoire, performing with leading jazz musicians and recording albums that combined improvisation with classical technique. He founded the International Musikforum at the Ossiacher See festival and later established the Gulda Jazz Workshop, promoting cross-genre collaboration. Gulda’s later years were marked by provocative performances and a continued commitment to musical education. He remained active as a performer and teacher until his death in 2000, leaving a legacy that continues to influence pianists across classical and jazz traditions.
