Bio

Idir (1949–2020) was a Kabyle Algerian singer-songwriter and musician whose work helped bring traditional Berber music to international audiences. Born Hamid Cheriet in Beni Yenni, Algeria, he rose to prominence in the 1970s with his hit single "A Vava Inouva," a modern take on a Kabyle lullaby that became an anthem for Berber cultural identity. Throughout his career, Idir blended Algerian chaabi, gnawa, and raï styles, often addressing themes of exile, cultural preservation, and social justice. He spent much of his life in France after leaving Algeria in the 1970s, using his platform to advocate for the recognition of the Tamazight language and Berber heritage. Idir released several acclaimed albums over five decades and collaborated with artists across North Africa and Europe. His death in 2020 prompted tributes across the Francophone and North African music worlds, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential voices in modern Algerian music.
