Bio
Rudolf Baumgartner (1917–2002) was a Swiss conductor and violinist renowned for his interpretations of Baroque and Classical repertoire. Born in Zurich, he studied at the city’s conservatory and later in Paris before establishing himself as a leading figure in European early-music performance. Baumgartner founded the Lucerne Festival Strings in 1956, directing the ensemble for more than three decades and shaping its distinctive, historically informed style. His extensive discography includes acclaimed recordings of works by Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart, many of which remain reference editions for chamber-orchestra repertoire.
