Bio
Oliver Nelson (1932–1975) was an American saxophonist, arranger, and composer whose work bridged bebop, hard bop, and big-band traditions. Born in St. Louis, he studied locally before moving to New York, where he quickly became a sought-after studio musician and arranger for artists such as Count Basie, Quincy Jones, and Cannonball Adderley. His 1961 album The Blues and the Abstract Truth remains his best-known recording, featuring the enduring standard “Stolen Moments.” Nelson’s writing combined sophisticated orchestration with blues-rooted phrasing, and he continued to produce influential albums and film scores until his death in 1975.
