Pandit Jasraj

Bio

Pandit Jasraj (1930–2020) was an Indian classical vocalist renowned for his mastery of the Mewati gharana. He began his career as a tabla accompanist before dedicating himself to vocal music, becoming one of the foremost exponents of khyal singing. His expressive style, marked by intricate taans and emotive phrasing, earned him widespread acclaim across India and abroad. Over a seven-decade career, Jasraj performed at major festivals and concert halls worldwide. He received numerous honors, including the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, and served as a guru to many disciples who continue the Mewati tradition. His recordings and live performances remain benchmarks for students of Hindustani classical music.
