Isaac Stern

Bio

Isaac Stern (1920–2001) was an American violinist renowned for his technical mastery and expressive interpretations of the classical repertoire. Born in what is now Ukraine and raised in San Francisco, he studied at the San Francisco Conservatory and quickly established himself as one of the leading violinists of the mid-20th century. Stern performed extensively with major orchestras worldwide and recorded landmark accounts of concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. He also championed contemporary works and premiered pieces by composers such as Leonard Bernstein and Krzysztof Penderecki. Beyond the concert stage, Stern was a tireless advocate for the arts, helping to save Carnegie Hall from demolition in the 1960s and mentoring generations of younger musicians through master classes and recordings.
