Bio

Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a Cuban pianist and composer renowned for his virtuosic technique and deep roots in Afro-Cuban traditions. Born in Havana in 1963, he began performing professionally as a teenager and quickly gained recognition for blending jazz improvisation with the rhythmic complexity of Cuban music. After moving to the United States in the early 1990s, Rubalcaba established himself as a leading figure in Latin jazz, collaborating with artists such as Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, and Chick Corea. His recordings often explore both original compositions and reinterpreted standards, showcasing a refined harmonic sensibility and lyrical touch. In addition to his work as a bandleader, Rubalcaba has contributed to numerous film scores and educational initiatives, maintaining an active international touring schedule while serving on the faculty of several music institutions.
